North Carolina Traffic Tickets

North Carolina has two point systems for traffic tickets: DMV points and insurance points. DMV points are applied to your driver’s license and affect whether you will keep your driving privileges. Insurance points directly affect your insurance premiums by a mathematical formula. The two systems are different, making the point values differ for the same infraction.

These point values are not based on a CDL.

Grounds for suspension

  • Accumulate 12+ Points

  • Accumulate 8+ Points within 3 years after reinstatement from a suspension/revocation

  • Speeding 16+ mph over the speed limit when the ticketed speed exceeds 55 mph

  • Speeding 76+ mph when the speed limit is less than 70 mph

  • Speeding 81+ mph when the speed limit is 70 mph

  • Convicted of two 56+ mph tickets (including reckless/aggressive driving) within 12 months

Assignment of points

*Points are not assigned for these offenses if no other moving violation was committed in the last 3 years. However, it is important to have these charges amended since some insurers will remove safe driver discounts upon conviction of these offenses.
